Changing Perceptions seeks to unite people from diverse backgrounds through the universal language of football. By sharing a stand, a game, and a conversation, participants are encouraged to rethink long-held assumptions and move toward a more informed, tolerant, and respectful understanding of one another. The aim is simple: to replace misconceptions with genuine connection.
We’ve chosen football because it transcends barriers — anyone can take part, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, or ability. The stadium becomes a level playing field, where titles and labels are left at the turnstile and community is built through a shared passion.
Led by The OppO Foundation, the project is delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Defence, 42 Brigade, and local youth and faith organisations, ensuring a wide mix of voices and experiences. Bury Football Club is generously hosting the programme, providing match tickets to welcome participants into a friendly and neutral environment.
Each event brings together a cross-section of the local community — including service personnel, veterans, reservists, young people, and faith groups — to enjoy the match side by side. After the final whistle, structured but informal discussions allow everyone to share their stories, explore differences, and discover common ground. These conversations help build strong, positive relationships that participants can carry back into their everyday lives, strengthening the communities they belong to.
